Why does 3VR Evidence Viewer only open in Safe Mode?

When attempting to run Evidence Viewer to view exported 3VR video, this error message may be generated:

Safe Mode Dialog

In general, if a PC is capable of playing a DVD it should be able to play video in Evidence Viewer. This error message typically indicates that hardware acceleration on the computer is either not available (because it is not supported by the computer’s video card), or has been disabled.

You can check whether hardware acceleration is enabled using the following steps:

In Windows XP:
1. Right-click the desktop and select Properties to open the Display Properties dialog.
2. Click the Settings tab.
3. Click the Advanced button.
4. Select the Troubleshoot tab.
5. You’ll see the Hardware Acceleration slider bar. If you are able to edit this setting, make sure it is set to Full.

In Windows Vista:
1. Right-click the desktop and select Personalize to open the properties window.
2. Click the Display Settings link.
3. Click the Advanced Settings button.
4. Select the Troubleshooting tab.
5. Click the Change Settings button (if available).
6. You'll see the Hardware Acceleration slider bar. If you are able to edit this setting, make sure it is set to Full.

In Windows 7:
1. Right-click the desktop and select Screen Resolution to open the screen display options window.
2. Click the Advanced Settings link.
3. Select the Troubleshoot tab.
4. Click the Change settings button (if available).
5. You’ll see the Hardware Acceleration slider bar. If you are able to edit this setting, make sure it is set to Full.

Using 3VR Evidence Viewer in Safe Mode

If changing this setting is not possible and this message persists, click the Continue button on the message to open Evidence Viewer in Safe Mode. In Safe Mode, users can still view video, but there are limits on video playback - video cannot be resized, and it will not be possible to view multiple channels simultaneously.
